Mr. Billings - WW1

A local historian, Mr. Billings kindly took time out to talk about the local people of Sowerby and Thirsk who fought in WW1.

Mr. Billings met Year 6 pupils at the cenotaph in Sowerby village to talk about the names inscribed on the cenoraph which he has researched.  He told the children about some of the men's occupations, ages and where they lived. Artefacts were passed round for the children to look at: shovel for digging trenches, spoons to eat with, as well as barbed wire, bullets and shrapnel. Afterwards, they all went into St. Oswalds church to look at the memorial plaque and talk about the soldiers in more detail.

A big thank you to Mr. Billings for taking time out of his busy day and sharing his knowledge about WW1 with us.

Mr. Billings has written a book about the soldiers of Sowerby and Thirsk and if you want to read it, please click on the link below. to reach St. Oswalds Church Sowerby
